PRESENTING A NEW CD FROM CARMEL OF RENO

The sisters of Reno Carmel are happy to present 'A Contemplative Christmas', a new CD recording of sacred Advent and Christmas music in lovely original arrangements designed to quiet the listener’s heart, drawing all into that contemplative space where the meaning of the season, Emmanuel, God with us, can be experienced anew as a living reality.
A Contemplative Christmas features 22 of the most loved
carols, from O Come, O come Emmanuel, I Wonder as I Wander, Silent Night and O Holy Night, to the exuberance of Ding Dong Merrily on High. The combination of instruments

with Sisters Clorinda: piano and clavinova; Rosalind: harp; Rosemary: recorder; Claire: cello and guest violinist Jennifer Sokol make for lovely settings of these carols which include eight original arrangements by Sr. Claire heard here for the first time: The Wexford Carol, Angels We have Heard on High and Away in a Manger, among others. We pray this music will convey the peace and joy of the Christmas message to all our listeners.

WEST COAST CARMELITE MEETING

Lake Tahoe: what a beautiful setting for the West Coast Carmelite meeting
we hosted from October 25 to 30th at the Zephir Point
Presbyterian Conference Center.  The awesome Lake view was
such an inspiration to the sisters and our Carmelite friars participating from Eugene, OR, Seattle, WA, the Sisters of Mary, Newport, WA, San Rafael and San Diego, CA. We talked about our life, our future and our present challenges and rejoiced in this opportunity to bond more closely with each other and to meet new members. Our gathering was enriched and highly animated by Susan Terry, our invited Presenter, who guided our sharing on communications skills and issues of special interest to the sisters.

Join us for our 31st CARMEL OF RENO OPEN HOUSE

We would like to invite you to our 31st Annual Printshop Open House which will take place on Sunday, November 8th from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.  An extreme makeover to the Printshop took place this past year.  With a very generous grant from the E. L. Wiegand Foundation, the entire operation has gone digital.
As usual we will have our Christmas Cards, All Occasion Cards, books and matted prints on display. You are welcome to tour the brand new E. L. Wiegand Printshop at Carmel to see how cards are made in the digital age. The Sisters' art work will also be displayed.

Through the years our Open House has become a wonderful time to meet new friends and visit with those of you who have known us through the years. We value your friendship and support and hope to see you.

During November we remember our beloved dead and the day closes at 4:00 with a prayer service dedicated to your departed loved ones. We hope to see you on November 8th. For directions to our monastery please click the 'Contact Us' link on the left.

Sister Maria's Column: The Dormition of Mary

The Death of the Virgin Mary was a widely depicted scene in the late Middle Ages.
According to one tradition, she was not dead but only sleeping during the three days until her resurrection, hence "Dormition." The Golden Legend tells how the angel caused the apostles, who were scattered over the world, each to be caught up in a cloud and borne to the Virgin's door. Here, the Virgin lies surrounded by the apostles. Christ stands behind her bed, holding in his arms a tiny effigy that represents the Virgin's soul.
